Survival games have a reputation for turning play into chores, and Deep Verdant sets out to break it. The early hours are genuinely tense, with scarcity that forces real decisions, and the crafting curve is tuned so that progress always feels earned rather than farmed.
It thins out toward the end, and the base-building tools can be fiddly, but as an on-ramp to a famously punishing genre it is one of the best we have played.
